U.S. daily COVID cases climb to above 200,000, near 1-year high

The global tally for COVID-19 topped 280.0 million as of Monday morning and the death toll climbed to more than 5.4 million, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. leads the world with a total COVID-19 case count of 52.3 million and death toll of 816,610. The daily average case in the U.S. over the past seven days shot up to 214,499 on Sunday, the most since Jan. 17, and up 83% from two weeks ago, according to a New York Time tracker, the same day Dr.

Anthony Fauci, the White House's chief medical adviser, warned that the daily case count would likely go much higher. If there's a bright side, the daily average death toll slipped to 1,328 from 1,345 on Saturday, up 3% in two weeks, and was well below the average back on Jan. 17 of 3,287. Hospitalizations rose 8% from two weeks ago to 71,302, compared with the Jan. 17 average of 134,653. Meanwhile, the number of fully vaccinated in the U.S. was 204.7 million, or 61.
