Council stopped paying family's £5,000 housing benefit because their home burned down
A judge has ordered Salford city council to repay a family of seven more than £5,000 they lost in housing benefit when a fire tore through their home. Sam Steinhart, his wife and five children were rendered homeless in June 2021 when the blaze gutted their Park Avenue home in Broughton.

"Your liability for the new property did not start until July 11 2021," she said.
"The case law does not expressly limit closed period supersessions in this way," she said. "And I have not identified any good reason to support such a restrictive approach.
