They are accused of being part of an operation that received more than $300,000 from victims across the United States. From October 2016 until August 2017 the woman wired or attempted to wire more than 80 Western Union, MoneyGram and Ria money transfers totaling approximately $123,000 to the couple, the charges state.
Made 58 cash deposits totaling approximately $90,000 into Wells Fargo bank accounts of Smith and Greenwood between July 10, 2017, and Jan. 20, 2018. Smith and Greenwood are charged with mail and wire fraud along with conspiracy to commit money laundering, mail and wire fraud.The indictment provides this description of a typical advance payment scam:
