ICYMI: COVID-19: Sask. reports 33 deaths, rising hospitalizations

The province’s latest epidemiology report shows key indicators heading in the wrong direction, affirming physicians’ fears that the province is in for a drawn-out fight after it abandoned indoor masking and self-isolation rules at the end of last month.

Saskatchewan no longer issues daily COVID-19 data updates and has ceased providing such data to the Public Health Agency of Canada, making cross-jurisdictional comparisons difficult. A Saskatchewan Health Authority medical health officer said last week that the province had the highest death rate in Canada.

As of roughly 4 p.m. on Thursday, Saskatoon’s hospitals were 40 patients over the typically available bed space, and there were 55 patients in emergency rooms listed as “admit no beds,” meaning they could not be transferred to other units for want of available staff.
