The Chicago Police Department is seeking a budget increase from the nearly $2 billion allotted for 2024, citing challenges with combating carjacking and the city's migrant crisis, with Supt. Larry Snelling appearing before a City Council committee on Tuesday.
29th Ward Ald. Chris Taliaferro cast doubt on the numbers provided by CPD, citing that department is budgeted for 13,500 officers. “It will be helpful to us as a department to replace some of these positions with non-sworn and retired police officers to come back and do some of the work that we have sworn members doing right now,” Snelling said.Ward Ald. Jason Ervin agreed, saying it's not necessary to send a sworn officer out to take pictures at a crime scene when a well-trained civilian could do the same.
