Chicago Public Schools outlined plans to handle COVID, including tests and considering remote learning for individual classrooms.
CHICAGO -- Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez and Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady outlined plans to bring students back safely next week.
CEO Martinez said the district is prepared to act quickly and they will be analyzing cases at the classroom level and if they see issues arise, individual classes could be transitioned to remote learning. Dr. Arwady said the most important thing is to make sure kids are vaccinated. In addition to that, kids should have a mask that is comfortable and fits well.CEO Martinez said they are expecting case rates to be high with students being with family at events over the break. He said CPS would be getting a steady stream of at-home COVID testing kits.
Martinez said the district has hired 60 nurses to work on contact tracing after hours and on weekends. The plan comes as CPS students are encouraged to submit their COVID-19 test kits by Thursday in order to get the results before school resumes next week.Martinez said the kits were picked up and are being processed and even the kits that were outside the bin were not damaged and are being processed.
