LOS ANGELES — Even with everything we know about the wildness of the “El Trafico” rivalry, Thursday night’s Western Conference semifinal showdown at Banc of California Stadium surpassed expectations.There were five goals, the last coming in stoppage time by No. 9 Cristian Arango cleaning up a rebound off a shot by No. 99 Denis Bouanga in the 93rd minute to clinch Los Angeles Football Club’s thrilling 3-2 victory over the Galaxy.
The victory was LAFC’s second playoff triumph over the Galaxy in a Western Conference semifinal, adding to their 5-3 victory in 2019. Segura helped LAFC take the lead in the 24th minute when he found Carlos Vela at the top of the box. The Mexican forward snuck a perfect pass to Denis Bouanga, who beat Galaxy forward Douglas Costa to the spot and hit the ball past Jonathan Bond for the French Designated Player’s first playoff goal.
Referee Allen Chapman kept the red card in his pocket, and Puig got off with a yellow card warning, one of five that were issued during the match. LAFC’s good work was undercut when it gave away the lead prior to halftime – and this time Segura was on the opposite end of things.
