The Cubs announced a three-year extension for manager David Ross on Friday.
Ross, whose deal came together quickly earlier in the winter, was signed through this year under his original contract. The new contract includes this year and has a fourth-year option for 2025 attached.“It hasn’t been two easy years,” team president Jed Hoyer said. “The fact that it wasn’t two easy years is part of why we have such comfort in giving him the extension. He’s had to deal with real adversity and real uncertainty, and he’s done it really smoothly. Players love him, as they should.
Ross managed a division winner during his 60-game debut as a manager, finishing third in manager of the year voting after that pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He had last year’s budget-slashed team in first place on June 24 before a long losing streak changed the course of the season and compelled a long-expected selloff of such core players as Anthony Rizzo, Javy Báez and Kris Bryant at the trade deadline — all teammates of Ross on the Cubs’ 2016 championship team.
“The way he handled those really difficult decisions — he understood why we were doing what we were doing for the organization,” Hoyer said. “He was behind it. And he had to be out front talking to the media and the fans every day, and I think he did it really well.Where the Cubs go from here, this year and the next few, is as challenging to predict as the last two seasons might have been to manage.
