The Cubs officially announced their one-year deal with Andrelton Simmons on Tuesday.
What does the addition mean for the Cubs?
Simmons certainly fills one of the Cubs’ biggest offseason needs. They entered the winter looking to add a bonafide everyday shortstop and plus defender behind a rotation with three pitch-to-contact starters atop of it. They have also talked about Hoerner playing multiple positions in 2022, and he prepared as such this winter. With Simmons aboard, Ross has more lineup combinations with his middle infield.
David Bote is another second base option later in the season after he returns from offseason shoulder surgery. You also can’t rule out Hoerner playing at least some short, with Madrigal at second, even after the Simmons signing.“We have a lot of confidence in Nico playing shortstop,” Hoyer said. “He’s also an elite defensive second baseman. And we couldn’t have been more excited to trade for Madrigal [last summer].
