Three of the five deaths Thursday came in Cleveland and involved two men and a woman. Authorities reported that women from Broadview Heights and Parma also were victims.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities issued a public health alert Friday as five people died in 12 hours from drug overdoses in Cuyahoga County.
That would exceed its deadliest year of 2017, when 727 people died. Most people died that year because of the increased usage of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is far more powerful than heroin.“Drug overdose continues to be a problem in our community with periodic clusters of deaths like yesterday,” Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Thomas Gilson said in a statement. “Individuals should avoid using illicit drugs or use a harm reduction plan in the event they are unable to stop using.
“It’s very sad that we have those five overdoses like that in such a short amount of time,” said Scott Osiecki, the executive director of the Cuyahoga County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board. “In working with law enforcement, you see that as soon as they are able to cut off one supply, there is another one coming in right behind it,” Osiecki said.
Additionally, the agency has placed five vending machines in Cleveland that contain free naloxone kits and other harm reduction supplies.
