A Scots military piper has set a sombre tone for the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, by playing a lament at sea at precisely the moment the historic beach invasion began in 1944.
Maj Macey-Lillie, speaking with PA news agency, expressed feeling "totally humbled and privileged" to partake in the remembrance. His tribute commenced aboard a landing craft utility before proceeding up the beach via a DUKW amphibious vehicle. The memorial, inaugurated in 2021, pays homage to the 22,442 service personnel under British command who lost their lives on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy in the summer of 1944. This will be the first significant anniversary event held at the memorial, with Charles and Camilla officially opening the Winston Churchill Centre for Education and Learning after Thursday's commemorations.
The Prince of Wales and senior ministers will represent the UK at the international event, joining over 25 heads of state and veterans for the official ceremony on Omaha Beach, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. Thursday's events follow a poignant ceremony in Portsmouth on Wednesday, where His Majesty was seen possibly wiping away a tear during a tribute to the "courage, resilience and solidarity" of veterans.
