With one in five Texas children facing hunger on a regular basis, a handful of Dallas-area school districts are going “above and beyond” in fighting food...
Garland ranked No. 4 in the state in Children At Risk’s school food rankings, behind San Antonio, Pasadena and Houston ISDs.
“We know that school meals are essential to combat hunger and food insecurity, so kids can learn,” said Sharon Watkins Jones, Children At Risk’s chief equity officer. “There are Texas school districts who continue to take innovative approaches toward meal delivery systems and they ensure that every student has access to three meals.”
Three Rio Grande Valley school systems finished in the top five of Children At Risk’s overall rankings: No. 1 McAllen, No. 2 Brownsville and No. 5 Pharr-San Juan Alamo. Irving earned its mark by having 54% of eligible students participating in school lunch, and 52% of those students also having breakfasts.
While top 10 districts had over 70% participation in breakfast programs, the weakest 10 districts, which included “several charter districts” according to Children At Risk, had breakfast participation rates between 11 and 27%.
