Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax is pledging to curb long building permit delays, come up with more ways to address homelessness and be more visible to residents in the next 100 days.
While Broadnax’s goals and Johnson’s priorities touch on similar subjects, they vary in the exact issues they hope to tackle.Johnson lists public safety initiatives among his top funding requests. He is asking for the city to focus on hiring and retaining first responders, address hate crimes and make sure firefighters have working equipment.
“Our critical city services — such as development services — must be run efficiently and effectively,” Johnson said in a memo to Broadnax. “Our infrastructure needs our continued attention and maintenance. Our environmental issues must continue to be addressed. And our neighborhoods need more safety and support.
Broadnax also said he’ll push for urging the public to report more nonemergency crimes online to allow 911 calltakers to focus on higher priority calls. He also wants to create a plan for a new team dedicated to addressing homeless encampments and aiding the people living there. He’ll also take part in and lead listening sessions for residents and business owners to directly tell him about issues and how to find solutions to them.
The current fiscal year’s city budget of $4.35 billion and was largely boosted by federal coronavirus relief money as well as increased property and sales tax revenues. The boosted funds could continue in the 2022-23 budget year, which begins Oct. 1.
