A Dallas tax attorney faces dozens of federal charges after authorities say he helped his clients hide more than $1 billion in income from the IRS.

Garza pleaded not guilty to the 41 charges Wednesday at his initial court appearance. His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Garza and others then prepared and filed fraudulent tax returns, according to the U.S. attorney’s office for the Northern District of Texas. The falsified returns included deducting business expenses for services that hadn’t taken place and reporting gross receipts for payments that weren’t earned, authorities said.

Garza faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for each count of fraud and three years for each count of filing of false tax returns.
