Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon discusses how the animated sci-fi series made him more of a team player. Season 6 of the Adult Swim show is set to premiere on September 4th with an episode entitled "Solaricks." Coming up on its 10th year on the air, Rick and Morty has managed to maintain its status as one of the most popular adult animated series.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Harmon has been playfully vocal about the similarities he shares with Rick and Morty's egotistical and sociopathic patriarch. He is well-known for his perfectionism in the creative process, previously describing how he refused to send his ideas to the show's artists in the early days of Rick and Morty.
"The challenge for me has been in trusting collaborators, because I'm 49 and the show is 10 years old, so what is its hope of staying fresh and relevant? The answer is younger writers and not me going away but me deferring, trusting them, listening to them ... My wisdom has to start replacing what used to be me being like, 'It has to be like this, because I'm passionate. I care about TV. I'm 32 years old. Me, me, me.
Harmon's comments bode well for the longevity of the series. Recently renewed for a 70-episode order, Harmon has stated his plans to continue the show past those 70 episodes. His commitment to keeping the show fresh by bringing in and trusting younger voices will offer the perfect mixture of Harmon's signature style, timely, relevant comedy, and pop culture references that fans have expected from Rick and Morty.
Harmon's approach of expanded collaboration is undoubtedly paying off, with Rick and Morty in the running for its third Outstanding Animated Program Emmy in a row this year.
