Taking part in Dancing On Ice is more than just a job as far as Michelle Heaton is concerned. After battling three dark, destructive years of alcohol addiction that almost tore her family apart, the former Liberty X singer reveals she wept with gratitude when she got the call from ITV bosses – and was comforted by her daughter Faith at their Hertfordshire home.
On Sunday night, Michelle, who also has eight-year-old son, AJ, with Hugh, had an emotional start to the ITV skating show as she became teary and apologised to her professional partner Lukasz Rozycki. The duo received a low score of 19 from the judges, with Oti Mabuse encouraging her to "breathe and believe in herself" after the gravity of the moment got the better of her.
"We’re very lucky to have got a second chance at our marriage – and by that I mean Michelle’s worked hard on her programme to get herself sober and we can enjoy each other a lot more now. We’re aware it could have easily gone the other way. I never considered walking away, but it was by no means an easy battle to come through the other side.”
“I’m so lucky,” Michelle says. “Łukasz and Hugh are so similar. They’re very matter of fact, they can be direct and they are great men. Łukasz is a really understanding and patient partner. I trust him wholeheartedly and his wife, Alex, is amazing. We get on really well.” Hugh was at Michelle’s side in September 2021 when she went to the GP with what she thought was irritable bowel syndrome, only to be told it was life-threatening liver failure. At that moment, Hugh thought he was looking at a future as a single father.

But obviously not. It was a real culture shock. The first week was very difficult. Everything was coming out as I was sobering up – it was awful, it was painful. You’ve got that pain that you’re missing something, that you’re mourning something.
