We chat with AmericanBornChinese star Daniel Wu (danielwuyanzu) about bonding with his onscreen son, played by Jimmy Liu, and portraying an iconic figure in Chinese mythology, Sun Wukong:
American Born Chinese makes its triumphant debut on Disney+ this week, where it will welcome some of the most famous figures in Chinese mythology to Western television. Based on Gene Luen Yang's acclaimed graphic novel of the same name and boasting episodes directed by Destin Daniel Cretton , the show centers on a mild-mannered high schooler named Jin who reluctantly befriends the new transfer student Wei-Chen , and thus stumbles into the latter's secret world of gods and quests.
Daniel Wu: Yeah, Jimmy is a really cool, charismatic young actor, and he brings so much to the character. But he reminded me a lot of when I first started my career in Asia, and when I went to Hong Kong to work for the first time. Chinese wasn't my first language, and I didn't have a mastery of it. So, it was difficult, and there's a lot of anxiety from going on set all the time, trying to remember lines, and all that kind of stuff.
And what was really cool was just to see his real-life relationship with Ben [Wang] and Sydney [Taylor] grow as we made this series. Their chemistry is so beautiful onscreen, and that's because they really had a great friendship in the real world. It was cool that when Jimmy was filming fight scenes, Ben and Sydney would come and watch him and support him. And when they were doing their scenes, Jimmy would go and watch them.
Then you walk into that set and see all these weird creatures. It reminded me of the Star Wars scene where they walk into that [cantina], and there are all these weird creatures there. It sets the tone for what Star Wars is gonna be about. It was very similar in that aspect; you get a quick introduction to all these iconic mythological Chinese characters.
