Hall of Famer dies at 83 following an amazing life on and off the football field
Whether we recall an amazing carry, played backyard football while pretending to be the Saskatchewan Roughriders iconic fullback or met him away from the field, where he served his community overseeing Special Olympics events and helping so many charities, Reed touched virtually everyone in this province.Outside a Winnipeg hotel with Reed and former Calgary Stampeders linebacker Wayne Harris, where they had been named in 2006 to a TSN list of the CFL’s 100 greatest players.
As a sports writer I talked to him frequently for stories or just to say hello. Because he always seemed invincible, it was jarring to see him him in a wheelchair when Reed attended an event in Humboldt to commemorate the junior hockey Broncos’ tragic bus accident in 2018. But his eyes were glowing and he spoke proudly when seeing Georgette’s athletics career being honoured upon her 2019 induction into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame.
As his notoriety grew and he became a citizen who was constantly helping numerous causes, Reed’s post-football job with Molson moved him to Calgary, where he lived until the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation invited him to return in 2009 with a position that sent him back into an appreciative and adoring public.
