We chat with LaBrea showrunner David Appelbaum about tonight's season 2 premiere on nbc, what's awaiting Josh and Riley in 1988, who's in the tower in 10,000 BC, and what the actors actually see instead of woolly mammoths:

NBC's La Brea, which had the distinction of becoming the highest-rated new series last year, is back tonight for season 2. This first season shifted between the present day, where the La Brea Tar Pits gave way to a sinkhole, and the civilians who were thrust to what is roughly 10,000 BC.

David Appelbaum: A few things. I think 1988 is going to be a really fun time period for our characters and the audience to watch. There's the music, there's the fashion and pop culture, the cars of the time period, and the fish-out-of-water story for Josh and Riley. They're kids from the modern age going back in time to a place that they're not familiar with, and there's always fun associated with that.

David Appelbaum: Isaiah will be a character who is going to play a role in in the season. Also, the idea of meeting some of our characters’ younger selves in that time period is another thing that is going to come back through the course of the season. That's part of the fun of that time period; you can meet a character who's 50 years old in 2022, and you can meet their teenage self in 1988. We’re going to be playing with that during the season.

There are ideas that I have, and longer-term goals and places that I'd like to bring the show, but it’s also important that you keep yourself open to discovery. As you get into the detailing and the mapping out of these episodes, new discoveries and new ideas come up all the time. You never want to be too stringent or say, “This is the way it has to be,” because then you close yourself off to what could be an exciting story.

David Appelbaum: It's going to change the trajectory of the characters in a huge way. We are going to eventually go into the building, we are going to learn who's there, why it's there, and how it's related to everything that's going on in the show. It's a central part of the season that's going to unfold, but we're not gonna give you all the answers right away. The answers are coming, though, and it's going to change the trajectory in a big way.

David Appelbaum: Hmm, that's a good question. It's a very complicated process, and it's different for every type of visual effect. With animals, there's a certain process, where on set there will be a signifier of the animal—either a performer in a blue suit, which will then become the wolf or tiger or something else later, or a stick that will be replaced later on. You want to give the actors as much as you can to be in the moment and feel like they can perform.
