Obituary: World War II Marine veteran David Roderick trained as an accountant, bought Marathon Oil and changed the company’s name to USX
David M. Roderick, who grew up in a working-class Pittsburgh neighborhood in the 1930s, was a C student in high school and excelled at boxing. “By most peoples’ standards I probably was not a very nice young person,” he told a local newspaper later. “I was very aggressive, very competitive, very combative.”
The Marine Corps, which deployed him to the Pacific as a platoon sergeant in World War II, gave him discipline.
