Bill de Blasio received a warm welcome across the Hawkeye State.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pitching himself to Iowa’s Democratic caucus-goers as the party’s best chance to defeat President Trump, ignoring skepticism back home over his chances as he toured an ethanol plant and heard from struggling farmers Friday.

Turnout at the fundraiser paled in comparison to crowds for other candidates who have made appearances at the party’s events. Amy Klobuchar, Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker and Julián Castro all commanded larger crowds, several attendees said.Voters who spoke to POLITICO said they appreciated his effort to understand their problems, which are quite different than issues facing New Yorkers.

The Naylors, who said the de Blasio team contacted them to arrange this visit, supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primary but said they are open to considering de Blasio’s nascent candidacy.“I will not support him at the caucus, not because he isn’t a good candidate or I disagreed with what he said,” said Tim Bottaro, who attended the evening fundraiser. “I would be a lonely person getting up on caucus night, caucusing for him, because I don’t think he’ll get that many.

The mayor, who often seems frustrated by the challenges of his job and the press corps that chronicles his every misstep, appeared virtually transformed during his first stint on the campaign trail.“My hard-working staff did have a few suggestions. They suggested it was the 21st century and there were some new fashion trends I should be aware of,” he joked.

“We really want to respect that they are going on with their lives," de Blasio said during a press conference in Des Moines. "They’ve got a lot they’re focused on and you’ll just have to make do with little old us."
