MISSION VIEJO — For nearly a half Friday night, De La Salle couldn’t have played better defense. Every time Lincoln-San Diego running back Roderick Robinson touched the ball, the Spartans swarmed.
On a night of electrifying plays by both teams, De La Salle fell short of capturing its eighth state championship as Lincoln celebrated a 33-28 victory at Saddleback College. “I very much thought we were going to go down and score and end the thing,” De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh said. “We were close. We got a penalty. It just seemed too many times this year where there would be a fumble or a penalty that kind of killed a drive.”
“Life is like that,” Harvard-bound lineman Derek Thompson said after his final high school game. “You take risks and sometimes you don’t end up winning. De La Salle has meant everything to me. I wouldn’t trade this for anything. You take lessons you’ve learned and you move on to the next thing in life. It still holds a special place in my heart.”A 15-play series that chewed up quite a bit of the first-quarter clock ended with a blocked field goal and a Lincoln return to midfield.
