The Texas House advanced a bipartisan bill Monday that would decriminalize fentanyl testing strips that detect the powerful opiate.
at his State of the State Address for this year’s legislative session, along with cutting property taxes, securing the border, education freedom and a few others.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It can be prescribed as a painkiller to treat severe pain after surgeries. House Speaker Dade Phelan also made the fentanyl crisis one of his legislative priorities this session. That , which makes manufacturing or delivering less than one gram of fentanyl a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.Fentanyl overdoses occur when a pill has been unknowingly laced with the opiate. Two milligrams of the drug — an amount so small it can fit on the top of a pencil — is able to kill a person.Texas joins several states that have also sought to decriminalize the testing strips.
