DEI: What it is and why it matters in engineering | Opinion
Diversity is the condition of including people with different experiences and backgrounds, including different races, ethnicities, genders, abilities, economic status, family education, etc. Diversity breeds innovation and makes companies demonstrably more profitable. In a university, understanding our diversity allows us to identify and recruit pools of untapped talent, without which we will be unable to meet the increasing demand for engineers in the workforce.
Inclusion is making all members of a community feel welcome and respected. Workers who feel included are more engaged and willing to contribute to the company’s mission. Students who learn in inclusive classrooms are more likely to connect to the material being taught and more likely to persist in their chosen fields.
Diverse teams are stronger teams. Even homogenous teams whose members are more technically skilled are outperformed by heterogeneous teams because of the latter’s diversity of problem-solving approaches.
