“I don’t think they have a downright bias; it’s more of HBCUs aren’t a priority,” said Orlando Arnold, an Alabama State University alum and certified agent who has had four HBCU clients. “For so long, there has been this notion that if you can play they will find you — and that still remains true. However, at HBCUs, so much has to go into making sure a player is seen. Does he have the stats? Does he have the measurables, etc.
Earlier this week, the attorney generals of California and New York announced a joint investigation into the league’s workplace practices, and the National Association of Black Journalists, after meeting with league officials last week, issued a statement Wednesday condemning the hiring practices within the league-owned newsroom.
The fight for racial equity within the NFL is real and deserves our attention, which is why energy should not be wasted on false narratives. As a proud graduate of Howard University, I would love to see more players drafted from HBCUs. But that is not going to happen unless four- and five-star recruits pass up the opportunity to play at Power 5 schools.
