Colorado football coach Deion Sanders is recovering after undergoing surgery Friday to repair blood clots in his left leg. Sanders told his children in an Instagram video that he expected to be released from the hospital Sunday.
“I had a big blood clot in my thigh that they got out, and I had some below my knee that they got out,” Sanders said in the video. “Then I’ve got one in the right leg that they’re going to get soon.”to relieve the blood clots in his leg. The procedure was done to improve blood flow so Sanders can undergo further surgeries to fix hammer toes and a dislocation of his foot. He added in Thursday’s announcement that there’s been “no talk of amputation.
Sanders noted in the video that he has no feeling in the bottom of his foot and discussed with his doctors the risks of any future procedures or ongoing complications from his condition. In October 2021, Sanders had his left big toe and second toe amputated after blood clots blocked blood flow to his foot. He was in the hospital for 23 days and missed three games coaching Jackson State during his stay as a result. He coached in an electric wheelchair when he returned.
