DeMeco Ryans: 'Hard' for Texans to part with leading receiver Brandin Cooks

In his first public comments on the Brandin Cooks trade, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans was saddened to see Houston's leading receiver leave the team.PHOENIX — Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is not reveling in the departure of former wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Ryans addressed the trade for the first time sincefor fifth- and sixth-round draft picks last week, and the first-time head coach lamented the loss of the team’s leading receiver from the last three seasons.

“It sucks losing a talented receiver in Brandin,” Ryans said Monday morning at the NFL’s annual meetings at the Arizona Biltmore. “We never want to lose talented players. We’re really trying to acquire as many talented players as possible. So, it’s hard losing him, and I wish Brandin the best in Dallas. I know he’ll do well. We’ll have to move forward. Unfortunately, that’s part of the process, part of our business.

. The team’s former leading receiver asked for a trade at the Nov. 1 deadline, and when no partner was found, it remained only a matter of time before the divorce was finalized. Cooks said Jan. 9 that he was not interested in “being part of a rebuild,” and Houston’s hiring of Ryans, general manager Nick Caserio’s increased free-agent spending and the franchise’s 12 draft picks did not persuade Cooks to stay. People with knowledge of the team’s ongoing discussion with Cooks said a trade was inevitable as they entered the new league year.

The Texans have 10 wide receivers under contract. They signed former Rams and Titans receiver Robert Woods to a two-year, $15.25 million deal, and the 31-year-old veteran will be expected to replace Cooks’ role on the roster as a proven pass-catcher who can be both a reliable target and mentor younger receivers like Nico Collins and John Metchie III. The Texans own the No. 2 and No. 12 overall picks, and the franchise could still target a rookie receiver.
