Maybe once, the Democrats could have pitched a Biden administration as an opportunity to roll back the worst of Trump’s offenses and go back to some contested sense of normalcy. But the suffering of the people they represent is deepening, and I’m worried the Democrats aren’t prepared to rise to the challenge of helping them. As long as the party welcomes people like Kasich and Bloomberg, I don’t know that just the inclusion of people like Sanders or Ocasio-Cortez will be enough.
Another world is taking shape, and several different versions of it are possible. My fear is that this year’s convention will be a four-day reminder that the Democrats are still living in the old one, painfully out of step with the activists and organizers endeavoring to build the new one.
