Could Texas Sen. John Cornyn help pass bipartisan gun proposals
Cornyn has said little publicly about legislative responses to this week’s shooting. He was donating blood and visiting with locals on Wednesday, but expected back in Washington soon.
“We’ve seen this movie before, and the sad part is we’ve seen it so many times that we start to know the dialogue,” said Casey Burgat, legislative affairs program director at George Washington University. “So not only do we know how it’s going to end, but we know what the actors are going to say the whole time.”
“We know that the next news cycle is coming and as much shock and anger and sadness that we feel right now, a new day is going to come and the attention will be less focused on this and on to something else which gives a pretty clear exit ramp for Republicans that don’t want to move on this,” Burgat said.
“What’s your purpose for being in the United States Senate if it’s not at least to protect the children?” Manchin said.
