“Please listen to these voices,” Gutierrez said. “It’s too late for these families. But maybe if you show some political courage, you can save the next family from having to endure this kind of heartache.”Calling it the “defunding” of public education, Democrats took aim at what could be the chief political fight during this year’s legislative session, a push to create a school choice system that could funnel taxpayer dollars from public to private schools.
“Vouchers drain money from Texas’ already underfunded schools,” Hinojosa said. “We should be focused on investing more into our schools to ensure they’re best in the nation — not taking funding away.” Several members of Texas’ Democratic Congressional delegation also took turns talking up accomplishments in Washington under President Joe Biden. Speakers included Dallas Reps. Collin Allred and Jasmine Crockett as well as San Antonio’s Joaquin Castro.
