This week, the Denver Film Festival will air “Reclaiming Denver’s Chinatown,” a documentary produced as part of the city’s I Am Denver project

Before chef Tommy Lee opened Hop Alley, a hip Chinese restaurant in Denver’s River North Art District, he delved into the history of Chinese people and culture in Colorado. What he learned led to the eventual name of the restaurant, and then, to a lot more.

Tommy Lee, owner of Hop Alley, photographed at the restaurant in Denver, Colorado on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. . Many Chinese immigrants worked on the railroad and in mines, welcomed to the country as laborers. But that greeting quickly turned to resentment and racism, not just in Colorado but across the country. In 1875, the U.S. Congress passed the Page Act, the nation’s first restrictive immigration law, which essentially prohibited Chinese women from entering the country.

University of Colorado history professor William Wei removes a 28-year-old plaque in LoDo in 2022 that many consider to include racist information about the anti-Chinese riot that took place in 1880 in what is now Denver’s Lower Downtown. At that point, “CAPU will turn its attention to applying for an Asian Pacific American historic district where the old Chinatown was located,” Wei said.

This mural design, created downtown by Hmong-American artist and graphic designer Nalye Lor, a Colorado native, and will showcase the story of Chinatown through the lens of the Chinese immigrant experience. By the late 1970s and ‘80s, the Lees began to frequent businesses opening along South Federal Boulevard that catered to immigrants from a wide variety of Asian Pacific countries.

In 1999 his parents moved to Denver to open up Lao Wang Noodle House, 945 S. Federal, a restaurant featuring Taiwanese street food such as shrimp pot stickers, spicy tofu jerky, xiao long bao, dan dan noodles, and beef noodle soup. The idea, he said, was to bring a taste of home to Denver since the Asian population there was growing. But after winning a few awards, the restaurant ended up being more popular with the non-Asian crowd.

“The Far East Center is called the Heart of Little Saigon, and it organically grew as more businesses started coming in,” said Luong, who now runs Truong An Gift with her mother in the complex. “If you ask anyone where the Asian place to go is, they would say Far East Center, it’s where you can eat, play, shop, celebrate and try different cultural things.”

The Luong family immigrated from Vietnam during the Vietnam War in 1975. The family, consisting of 19 people at the time, had prospered in their country, but gave up everything in order to come to the United States. When they arrived in Colorado they were given jobs in King Soopers stores. Each member of the family worked in various departments and locations.
