Councillor Áine Groogan outlines sketch for alternative to Cuture Night this year
The Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast has said it is “embarrassing” that the city will again not have Culture Night this year, despite the council pushing its big Belfast 2024 cultural programme.
At the Belfast Council City Growth and Regeneration Committee meeting, Councillor Groogan said: “We had Culture Night happening across Belfast for many years. It was a really successful night, with many people involved. Covid came and obviously it couldn’t happen, it went under a review and is in a bit of a flux period.
She said she did not want to put an additional burden on council officers who were “doing incredible work” on the Belfast 2024 programme, but said she wanted to “tease out” with them what would be possible as an alternative to Culture Night, and what funding the council could put aside for this. “It is obviously much too late to do new commissions for that date at this stage, but what I would like us to do as a city, is just open up the doors to our cultural venues that night. We would make it free of charge and accessible to people, and provide a little bit of support to those venues to cover the costs in terms of staff, music, entertainment and refreshments.
Sinn Féin Councillor Conor Maskey said: “There is nothing wrong with the idea, and nothing wrong with the intention behind the idea. But I have a big problem with the procedural end of this. I didn’t know anything was being brought before the committee until 4.30pm today. “There was an open call for £7 million for Belfast 2024, and that has been done already. I would be very worried that we would have a backlash from others who did go through that call. There is no detail here in terms of content, location, process - none of that in front of us.”
