I just finished watching, so the template for Watson’s future has already been established. Roethlisberger was credibly accused of rape, played the denial card until only the fiber of it was left visible, and then got a #ThankYouBen hashtag, a game-long sendoff from the Monday Night Football crew, andon his way out the door. Roethlisberger got away with it, and Roethlisberger is an ASSHOLE.
This is because Watson, like Roethlisberger, is unquestionably great at playing football. Any Browns fans who have disowned the team in the wake of this trade are outnumbered, many times over, by the Browns fans who are OVERJOYED at having him in the fold. Deshaun Watson is the kind of player who can win Super Bowls, hence his price tag . When you win, virtually everything is forgiven. That’s what the Browns are counting on.
I want to think there’s a breaking point to all this. I want to think there will be a scandal that somehow prevents all the other scandals from washing away. Certainly this one is large enough to qualify for that honor. I want to think that #MeToo changed the trajectory of how men behave and how society responds when they don’t.
