The number of LGBTQ+ romance books sold in 2020 more than doubled in 2021 🏳️🌈💕
While authors of these books do often see a spike in sales when their work is challenged, as a means of support from readers, LGBTQ+ youth will continue to lose out. Maia Kobabe, who wrote a frequently-banned illustrated memoir called “Gender Queer,” told“The part that really hurts is the fact that the people who might need this book the most are the people who are going to have less access. So it’s just another case of the most marginalized readers being further marginalized.
Book bans are part of the recent influx of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation we’ve seen across the United States. As of March 15, state lawmakers hadin 2022 that propose limiting the rights of LGBTQ+ citizens, with about half specifically targeting transgender people, according to NBC News. Only three months into the year, the U.S. has already surpassed what was a record-breaking year for homophobic and transphobic legislation filed in 2021, when 191 bills were proposed.
