Dinosaurs AND detectives?
Detective Data will officially be returning to Star Trek lore, as the flagship comic book kicks off its second year. Last fall, IDW launched a new Star Trek title, the opening salvo in a line-wide revitalization that netted the franchise’s first Eisner nominations, as well as building to its first ever comics' crossover. Now, as the book's first year comes to an end, readers are looking to what comes next - and it involves the return of one of Data’s most iconic personas.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Screen Rant recently spoke via email with Star Trek co-writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, Star Trek: Defiant writer Christopher Cantwell and Senior Editor Heather Antos. When asked what lay ahead for the crews of the Theseus and the Defiant, Antos reiterated the previously revealed "space dinosaurs" teaser, but Kelly added to it, saying "Detective Data.
Star Trek's First Year Set the Bar High The first year of IDW’s new line of Star Trek comics began with the publication of the one-shot Star Trek #400. The anthology book seeded the God War which has been the line’s overarching story, which culminated in Day of Blood, the franchise’s first ever comics' crossover.
Data Is a Natural Detective The android Data has had a long-standing fascination with humanity, even going so far as to wish he was human himself. Data is a keen observer of human behavior and culture, often exposing himself to music and art, all in a bid to learn what it is to be human.
The creative teams did not elaborate on how or why Data’s detective persona will return, but his last outing as Holmes was unforgettable, leading to the creation of a sentient Holographic Moriarty. Could Moriarty return as well? This would go a long way to fill in the gaps in Moriarty’s story; he was imprisoned in a holographic prison in The Next Generation’s sixth season, but was seen almost 30 years later in a Section 31 facility - perhaps this story will explain how he ended up there.
