New building safety laws were brought in following the Grenfell tragedy

A Manchester property developer has been asked by the government to pay millions of pounds in remediation over cladding issues in seven buildings.

Secretary of state Michael Gove is seeking £46m from Urban Splash to bring the residential buildings in line with new safety regulations following the Grenfell Tower disaster in 2017. The government is attempting to find £70m in order to fund the work across the country, according to reports in the Financial Times. Urban Splash declined to comment. The Manchester-based developer built the Chips Building in New Islington, which was completed in 2009. It is now owned by E&J Estates, and is one of the seven buildings which are due to undergo cladding work. The other six haven't been named.
