The increase coincided with the shutdown of schools across Alabama due to COVID-19.
The rate of new cases of type 2 diabetes nearly doubled among Alabama children during the pandemic, according to research out by the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently published in a scientific journal.
Researchers looked at new cases of type 2 diabetes between March 2017 and March 2021. Before the start of the pandemic, the average monthly rate of new cases was 11.1. After April 2020, the average rate of new cases per month jumped to 19.3, according to the study. Although many schools in the state reopened in the fall of 2020, some remained closed until spring 2021, including districts in Birmingham and Selma.found that the number of children who were overweight or obese increased during the pandemic.
