A fascinating, frank and fun interview with new watfordfc assistant coach Julian Dicks
Dicks played with Bilic at West Ham and the pair were room-mates on away trips. When Bilic managed the Hammers, Dicks was on his coaching staff, and he followed him to West Brom too.
“It’s nice to be with Slav. It’s good to be back with him, and it’s great to be back in a professional football environment because everything is done properly. Dicks was in the dug-out for the draw with Hull on Sunday having officially taken up his post in the days before the game.“The club has just come down from the Premier League, and they have some technically very good players.
“If you’re not playing that well but you’re working hard, then you will still win games. Sometimes that is the way you have to win games.” “Whether they take that on board is up to them: it’s their career. I just want to share the knowledge I gained when I played and now as a coach.” “Unfortunately it’s the way football is nowadays. If I was playing now, with referees as they are and how the game is played, I’d probably be getting a red card every other game. I don’t think I’d get to play many games these days if I carried on playing the way I used to.
“I said to the groundsman at the stadium on Sunday that I missed a penalty there when I was playing. Tony Coton says he saved it, I say it hit the post! But it was a penalty I tried to place, and that was the last time I ever did that.“A professional footballer should not miss the target from 12 yards. Ok, you might hit the post or crossbar. But you should never, ever, miss the target completely from 12 yards.
“I was bordering on being an alcoholic because I had nothing to do. So we both went to see John King, who was my surgeon. He’s a lovely bloke but brutally honest – and he told me to play golf. “He told me my swing was ok for a five handicapper but if I wanted to get to pro level where you’re repeating your swing 70-odd times a day, then I had to change it.
“The next day my knee was like a balloon, and I went to see my surgeon John King. He said to me: “You’re f****d.” Like I said, John was always brutally honest. “His name was Jim Cannon, and he said he could do something for my knee. And that was great because it meant I could play on. “The next day Harry called me into the office. The next game was at Newcastle and he said I could sit on the bench. I said no, there was no way I was going all the way to Newcastle to sit on the bench.“Does the knee still affect me? Have you seen me walk?! If you see me walk out of this room you’ll know. Cold weather affects it, training affects it, so I’m on tablets every day.”
“Being thought of that way doesn’t bother me or worry me. Put it this way: nobody has tried to fight me, which is a good thing.”“Every player has to give 100% in every game, that’s essential,” Dicks replied. “It’s about working as a team and having that team spirit to do that sort of thing. You have to stick together because things will go wrong. Even if you’re the best team in the league, things will go wrong and you have to have the spirit to cope with that.”
“Me and Slav both used to smoke cigarettes back then – I think the night before the game Slav went through two bottles of red wine, I went through a bottle of Jack Daniels.
