Barry George, now 63, was wrongly convicted for the murder of journalist Jill Dando in 2000. The unsolved case is now the focus of a new Netflix documentary
The 37-year-old newsreader was killed in broad daylight with one gunshot near her home in Fulham, London in 1999.
was shot dead on 26 April, 1999. Police were led to believe that Barry was behind her death, as the man lived near Dando’s flat in Fulham and had a record of stalking women. He had a previous conviction of attempted rape and indecent assault and had also been accused of assaulting his ex-wife a few months into their marriage.
George tried to reverse the decision, but judges at the Court of Appeal rejected his decision, a claim that was backed up by the House of Lords, when he tried to challenge the outcome again in 2002.George was finally acquitted unanimously in 2008 by a jury after being granted a retrial following new evidence that undermined the safety of his conviction.
George said that he still struggles to come to terms with his false accusation, which has had ripple effects on his and his family’s lives.
