The significance of the Sixers’ win over the Celtics might vary depending on your perspective. In the standings, it meant virtually nothing. The Sixers clinched no worse than the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, but if Boston wins one of its final three games or the Sixers lose one of theirs, then Philly will be locked into third.
Considering the two teams’ respective places in the standings, though, there may have been some greater psychological stakes. In a week and a half, the Celtics and Sixers will begin first-round playoff series that both teams will be heavily favored to win. If the chalk holds, the old rivals will then meet in the second round.Boston was 3-0 against the Sixers this season before this game.
“We might see them in a second round if we make it there. You got to be ready for every scenario,” Embiid said. “I just wanted to see where I’m at and where we’re at as a team. I think if we could correct a lot of the mistakes that we made, we got a pretty good chance.” Embiid differentiating between his standing and the Sixers’, while likely unintentional, was the main takeaway from Tuesday’s game, as well as the other Sixers-Celtics matchups this season. Heading into the postseason, Embiid has never been more prepared to go toe to toe with elite-level opposition. But there are major questions sizing up the rest of the 76ers’ roster.
Embiid’s MVP push has been fueled by his mastery at the elbows and the nail in the middle of the free-throw line. The decision to focus on that area of the floor was made with the postseason in mind.The Sixers run a set in which Embiid catches the ball at the left elbow while two Sixers engage in a screening action at the right elbow. The Sixers can score off that screen, but against Boston, it was merely window dressing to clear room for Embiid isolations.
