Man United manager Erik ten Hag is already seeing a response to his tactical demands.
As easy as Manchester United found their Carabao Cup third round tussle with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, it featured an array of uplifting success stories.
Manager Erik ten Hag, in a bid to freshen things up and give some of his recently injured players some much-needed game time, made seven changes from the side that defeated Burnley 1-0 in the Premier League just 72 hours earlier. Only Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, Hannibal Mejbri and Casemiro kept their places.
The inverted full-back tactic is something that is becoming a more regular theme in football nowadays, not least among the elite-level teams. It is a system that the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City regularly deploy. Speaking during pre-season, Dalot, who has capitalised on Aaron Wan-Bissaka's current injury, said: ''Like I've said before, the full-back position has been becoming a little bit more of an important role nowadays. I think in today's game the inverted full-backs are a little bit more involved and more coaches are trying that in the game.
Though one game, particularly against a weakened opponent, does not provide enough evidence to suggest that United are going to be able to carry out this tactic to the same level as what City have in recent years, for example, it does show that Ten Hag has full-backs who are capable of attempting it - and to a reasonably high standard. Dalot, despite having an up-and-down calendar year, has, overall, made solid progress under Ten Hag's stewardship over the past 15 months or so.
