U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris called out China for the second time in two days while in Vietnam, on the second leg of her Southeast Asian tour.

from Hanoi over the weekend after incidents involving “strange sounds” and symptoms associated with the syndrome. During the delay, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a previously unannounced meeting with the Chinese ambassador to the country, Reuters reported. During the meeting, Chinh said Vietnam does not take sides in foreign policy while the Chinese ambassador promised a donation of 2 million Covid-19 vaccines to the country.

The pivot comes as Biden winds down America’s decades-long involvement in the Middle East with a messy exit from Afghanistan. To counter Beijing’s growing influence in the region the Biden administration has ramped up its engagement in the Indo Pacific with Harris’ tour coming after a series of high profile visits to the region including Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. The U.S.’s messy exit from Afghanistan has led to some trepidations among U.S. allies about its commitment to support them.
