A new report by Scope reveals that disabled people in the UK face significantly higher living costs, averaging an extra £1,010 per month compared to non-disabled individuals. Energy bills are a major contributor to this disparity, driven by the need for continuous operation of medical equipment.
Life for a disabled person costs £1,010 more on average than a non-disabled person, research suggests, with energy bills one of the top outgoings, has to have her heating on as being less mobile means she feels the cold – but she sometimes has to go without food so she can afford to do so.
“The cold really impacts my condition too. Life is already pretty tough, but when I’m cold, the pain is a lot worse, so I have to have the heating on more than most, even in the summer.” James Taylor, executive director of strategy at Scope, said these extra costs have a “devastating impact” on disabled people’s standard of living.“These sacrifices put their health at risk, and at worst are life-threatening. The rising cost of living has already pushed disabled people beyond breaking point.”
In the summer months, she tops up her gas meter by £10, as she keeps the heating on low. But in the winter months, she pays £20 a week, if not more, to keep the house warm. She gets the enhanced rate of the daily living component of the benefit – £108.55 per week – and the enhanced rate of the mobility component – £75.75 per week.
