'Modern Family' and 'Encanto' are 'corporate statements' according to Bob Chapek
Photo: Image Group LA / Disney/Getty Images As Florida advances its controversial “Don’t Say Gay” Bill, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek wants employees to know that Disney stands with its LGBTQIA employees — even though Disney gave money to key politicians supporting the bill. And they’ll prove it by releasing “inspiring content” like Modern Family. That’s good enough, right?
“I and the entire leadership team unequivocally stand in support of our LGBTQ+ employees, their families, and their communities, Chapek wrote in a memo to Disney employees on Monday, March 7, per The Hollywood Reporter. “And we are committed to creating a more inclusive company — and world.
Chapek also claimed that Disney gave to politicians on both sides of the aisle, but the monetary donations were only part of the issue for Disney employees. Since the bill was passed in the Florida House of Representatives on February 25, employees and consumers have been questioning why Disney refused to give any official statement on the bill at all.
Chapek doubled down on this rationale in his memo on Monday, saying that he didn’t see the point in putting out a statement that could be used to “further divide and inflame,” adding that he sees Disney’s best course of action as continuing to put out diverse content. The CEO specifically cited Encanto, Black Panther, Pose, Coco, Shang-Chi, Modern Family, and Love, Victor as examples of “diverse stories” that he claimed acted as “corporate statements.
Unfortunately for him, Chapek’s assertion that Modern Family is a better “statement” against this “Don’t Say Gay” bill than an actual denunciation would be did not sit well with people. Disney employees, like The Owl House creator, Dana Terrace, are speaking out. Terrace posted an emotional video response to the memo on Twitter, calling it just a bunch of “pretty words to shut you up.” Fans are also expressing their concern on social media, with #BoycottDisney trending on Twitter.
