Disney postpones 'Mulan' indefinitely, pushes back Star Wars, Avatar movies
Walt Disney Co. DIS, -0.76% shares are down 1% after the company announced that"Mulan" -- scheduled for release Aug. 21, and expected to be a summer blockbuster -- has been delayed indefinitely because of theater closures and production shutdowns caused by the pandemic. The live-action movie has been repeatedly delayed. Additionally, Disney delayed releases of Star Wars and Avatar movies by a year, it said in a statement Thursday.
"Over the last few months, it's become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for 'Mulan' as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world," a Walt Disney Studios spokesperson said in a statement. Disney shares are down 18% in 2020. The broader S&P 500 index SPX, -1.23% is up 0.2% this year.
