Well, yes and no. , known as the “Festival of Lights,” is a Hindu holiday widely celebrated in India and across the global Hindu Diaspora.
, also called Deepavali , typically falls sometime between October and November, based on the Hindu lunar calendar, and lasts five to six days. The word Deepavali derives from Sanskrit and means “a row of lights” and commemorates the victory of good over evil and the light of knowledge over spiritual darkness.
Through various rituals, a retelling of a wide variety of sacred stories, and time spent together over several days, we renew a spirit of generosity by doing things like making charitable donations, feeding the hungry and endeavoring to help those in need. Many also partake in heart-warming celebrations where cows, dogs and other domesticated animals are honored and fed extra treats as a reminder to us humans of our obligation to care for all living beings.
