Safe to say the folks at the RNC and the Trump campaign are taking notes tonight, says POLITICO_Steve. There’s no real playbook for this circumstance — and the convention format hasn’t been disrupted in any major way since 1976. More DNC live analysis:
We’ve got a great cast of reporters here tonight to talk about the first night of this historic political event – the first virtual convention ever – and what it means for the general election. The overarching theme for this online convention is “Uniting America.” Tonight’s specific theme is “We the People,” which is designed to showcase the varied groups and individuals that have united together behind Joe Biden in his campaign to defeat Donald Trump.
The marquee speakers tonight are former First Lady Michelle Obama and Sen. Bernie Sanders. We’ll also hear from a roster of other prominent Democrats – and several well-known Republicans, including former GOP Gov. and presidential candidate John Kasich. The whole set-up is something of a high-wire act. The two hours of live programming each night will feature speakers based in a variety of different cities.
Is this a pre-recorded, slickly produced “conversation?” That might be what I would want if I had a candidate who has put his foot in his mouth a few times in recent months on matters of race.Hey everyone! Eugene Daniels here from my “English basement” in DC. I am most interested to see how the Democrats are going to overcome the awkwardness of pre-recorded speeches without huge crowds giving the speaker lots of energy and love and support.
Also, Michelle Obama — a not-so-secret weapon for Democrats. One of the most influential and loved people in the country, a great speaker whose 2016 gave Dems the “when they go low, we go high” mantra.Hello. Marc Caputo checking in from Tallahassee, Florida. I’m watching this convention to see if watching conventions like this are watchable.
