The General Medical Council had claimed that Dr Surya Dhulipala's fitness to practise was impaired but a tribunal has ruled she can continue working

A doctor who failed to give 'basic lifesaving' treatment to a newborn baby who later died has been allowed to continue working.

A coroner ruled in 2021 that little Finnley had been neglected by medics at The Vic. He said that, had it not been for the missed opportunities to treat Finnley, he would have survived. The MPTS panel, which adjudicates on complaints made against doctors and makes independent decisions about their fitness to practise, heard at the beginning of the tribunal that Dr Dhulipala has admitted all six allegations of impairment by reason of misconduct.

The panel has heard that, after the inquest into Finnley's death in October 2021, Dr Dhulipala has not worked in neonatal care. However, she hopes to return to paediatric medicine. She is currently training to become a consultant. On Thursday the MPTS panel ruled that Dr Dhulipala's fitness to practise is not impaired, which allows her to continue working as a doctor. Following this, the panel returned to issue her with a formal written warning.
