With the rise of social media, various health and wellness trends have gone viral. But one optician is warning people against some of the most popular eye tips and tricks

A warning has been issued that some influencers may be increasingly blurring the borders between entertainment and medical advice through their uninformed health tips. One optician is red-flagging some particularly popular eye care trends, exposing false claims like quick fixes for astigmatism or honey as a remedy for poor vision.

One particularly concerning myth that Mistry is eager to eliminate is the "sungazing" cure. This perilous practice involves influencers recommending followers to gaze at the sun during dawn or dusk, suggesting that it comes with manifold health perks, including improved vision. Another widespread falsehood is the belief that castor oil can improve vision and treat eye conditions like cataracts and glaucoma. Dr Mistry clarified: "Instilling castor oil certainly does not cure near or far-sightedness, nor does it benefit ocular conditions such as cataracts, floaters or glaucoma."

The latest trend to go viral involves honey-based eye drops, with claims that they can heal astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma, and floaters, using either commercial products or homemade concoctions of honey, vinegar, and water. The optician firmly denounced this practice: "Not only is this far from accurate, but there's no scientific evidence to support it, either...it's strongly advised not to apply any form of honey directly into your eyes.
