Judging by what little has been revealed about the next era of Doctor Who, it feels similar to RTD's well-worn 2005 template. Is that a bad thing?
Russell T Davies' second era of Doctor Who seems to be repeating many of the original era's successes, which could be a problem for the show. While Doctor Who is embracing the new era of streaming and has cast an exciting young actor as the Doctor, there are signs that it could be stuck in the past.
This all suggests that Davies is sticking to the format he perfected during his 2005-2010 run of Doctor Who, a format which was starting to feel tired at the time. Thankfully, the chemistry between David Tennant and Catherine Tate during Doctor Who season 4 lifted the final season above rigidly following a format of predominantly contemporary Earth-set stories featuring humanoid villains.
Both Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall understood that Doctor Who had to evolve its approach to keep in step with this increased global profile. 2010 - 2018 Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat was constantly tinkering with the format, and the show increasingly became more like a prestige sci-fi drama, especially when Peter Capaldi was cast as the Twelfth Doctor.
RTD’s Doctor Who Format Can Still Push The Show In A New Direction The main thing that will ensure that RTD's second Doctor Who era stands apart from his first is the considerably higher production values brought about by the co-production with Bad Wolf Studios, and the streaming partnership with Disney. This means that, even if the core story ideas might feel similar, the enhanced production capabilities can allow RTD to aim higher in terms of storytelling.
